How to choose a SEO provider
Written for someone actually choosing a supplier, not for someone selling one.
Can an SEO agency guarantee a Google ranking?
No. Nobody controls Google's ranking systems, so a guaranteed position is either a misunderstanding of the work or a misrepresentation of it. What a provider can commit to is specific deliverables in a given month: a technical audit, a set of pages fixed, a volume of content published. Judge proposals on what will be done, not on what is promised.
What should happen in the first month?
A technical audit, keyword and competitor research, and a prioritised list of fixes with someone named against each one. Ask to see a real audit they produced for another client, redacted if necessary. If a proposal jumps straight to publishing articles without diagnosing the site first, they are selling content production rather than search performance.
Whose analytics does the reporting come from?
Yours. Reporting should be built on your own Google Search Console and Analytics properties, with your team holding owner access. A dashboard only the agency can see cannot be checked, cannot be kept when the contract ends, and cannot be reconciled against anything. Ask for the raw Search Console access on day one.
How do I check whether they build risky links?
Ask directly whether link building is part of the work and, if so, how links are acquired. Paid placements, private blog networks and bulk directory submissions all carry manual action risk. A bad link profile costs far more to clean up than it ever earned. Ask for examples of links they built for another client in the last six months.
